The Meeting of Nicole and Jackson

I looked up from my burger to see a guy staring at me.  Not like the cute guy stare, but the potential stalker kind.  Weird.  I continued to eat my burger, trying not to look at him.  Then I hear a squeak, and the sound of someone sitting down.  I look up to find him sitting across from me, smiling.
“Um. Hi?” I say, unsure of what is the right thing to say when some random guy sits down across from you at a restaurant.
         “Hey.”  He replies, still smiling.
I tried to look down at my burger and continue to eat, but that was kind of hard to do with a random guy sitting across from you.
“What do you want?”  I said, sighing.
         “Your name.”  He replied, smirking.
“Isn’t that the thing everyone tells you not to give out?”  I replied, smirking right back.  He was not winning this.
“Well, mine is Jackson.  So, there for, I need to know yours to make this a proper introduction.”  He replied, stealing one of my fries.
“Nicole.  And don’t steal my food.”  I replied, starting to smile.  He was kind of cute.  Tall, tanned, brunette, and had a great smile.  Jackson.  Hmm.
“Well, Nicole, can I buy you a coffee?”  He asked, smiling.
It was noon, and I had nothing better to do.  “Sure.”  I replied, and dropped enough for the burger on the table, and grabbed my bag.
“Let’s go.”  He said, getting up.

Crimson’s Coffee was this little coffee bar on Second Street.  Apparently, he worked here, because he seemed to know everyone here.
         “You work here?” I asked.
“Yep.” He said, grabbing a 10 out of his wallet to pay for our coffees.
         “Barista?”
“During the summer.”  He replied, smirking.
         “And that means?”
         “My uncle lives here.”
         “Oh.”
“You like?”  He said, gesturing at my coffee.
“Definitely.” I replied.  “I love this place.  Best coffee in town.”
         “I agree.”
“Don’t you have to?”  I said, referring to his owner’s-son age.
         “Kind-of.”  He said, laughing.
“Well. Thanks for the coffee.”  I said, grabbing my jacket.
         “Welcome.”  He said, standing up.
“Well, bye.” I said, heading towards the door.
         “Wait!”  He said, behind me.
He ran up and grabbed a pen out of his pocket.  “Here this is my number.  Give me a call, k?”  He scribbled a number on my palm.  Doubtful.
         “Okay. Bye.”
“Bye!”  He seemed somewhat enthusiastic, like too enthusiastic.

Later that day, I was standing at the carnival, waiting for my mom to pick me up.  I’d been waiting for a while, checking my watch every few minutes.  Where was she?
5 minutes. 10. 15.  I ooked down at my hand, and saw the number.  Nicole, this is not a good idea, I told myself.  Oh whatever.
I grabbed my phone and dialed the number.
“Hello?”  He said on the other end.
         “Jackson?”
“That would be me. Nicole?”  He asked.
“Yeah.  Hey can you pick me up?”
         “Sure, where are you?”
         “Carnival, west end.”
“Be there in a sec.”  He said.
         “Thanks.”
“No problem.”  He hung up, and I stood there, considering the pros and cons of what I’d just done. Pros:  Cute guy. A ride. Cons: Don’t know the cute guy. Could be a stalker.  I decided the pros outweighed the cons, and sat down on the curb.
“Nicole!”  I looked up to see Jackson in a Mercedes, pulling shades off of his face.  Wow.
“Hey!”  I said, getting up and walking over the car.
         “Come on, get in.”
I remembered my pros and cons speech, and hopped in.  Live dangerously, right?

The Whole Deal With Jonah.

Here is the history, from the story:

When I closed the door behind me in my room, I saw my sisters all sitting on my bed in a row, waiting.
Michelle made the first move. “So?”
“Success!” I cried, and ran to them, throwing myself down onto the bed, with them catching me.
“I’ll get the music!” Claire said, getting up to turn on Vampire Weekend. This was a celebration mode. Hence, the Vampire Weekend.
“Let’s party!” Alli said, grabbing Michelle and me and pulling me off the bed.
All of four of us danced like crazy people for at least a half hour. Then I turned off the music. I didn’t want to push our luck.
They turned to stare at me. My sisters loved to dance, even more than me, which was saying a lot.
“How dare you.” Claire said, giving me ice cold stares.
“I didn’t want to push the luck.” I said, explaining my illegal actions.
“Oh.” All of them flopped on my bed, as tired as me.
“I’m going to the boardwalk and then shopping.”
“Meeting him?” This came from Michelle.
         “Ya’ think?”
“I knew it!” Alli said, punching her fist in the air. “Pay up people!” Claire and Michelle pulled out their wallets and grabbed some cash.
“What the hell are you doing?” I was so confused. They bet on me?
They all stopped, apparently having forgotten my problem with betting. “Whoops.” Alli muttered.
“Leave if you are going to bet. No contaminants in my room!” I practically yelled. One of my earliest boyfriends had gambled, and then gotten beat up because of it. In front of me.
“Sorry Nic.” Michelle and Claire said, but didn’t move.
I reached over and grabbed them by their shirtcollars, and then dragged them to the door.
“Bye!” I said, and shut the door. Alli was now facing me, shocked. “You too.” I said, and opened up the door for her.
“Sorry babe.” She said, and shut the door behind her.
Once she had left I sank to the floor, bawling.  That night flooded back to me, clear as day.
“Jonah!” I yelled above the music. “Where are you?”
“Nicole! Come here! I want you to meet someone!” I could hear his voice above the music, the only thing I wanted to remember.
“Coming!” I replied, and tried to weave my way through the crowd. It took me a bit longer than expected, and by the time I got to Jonah, he was on the floor. Bleeding. Not awake. “Jonah!” I screamed and sank down next to his side. “Wake up… Come on.” I picked up his head and cradled it in my lap. “Jonah…” I whispered, barely audible above the yelling and music of the pool hall.
“Miss?” I looked up to see a nice boy holding towel, in front of me.
“Oh. Thank you.” He handed me the towel, and I wiped the blood away from Jonah’s perfect face.
“Do you need any ice?” He asked, trying to be helpful.
“That would be great.” I replied, and continued to nurse Jonah’s wounds. “Baby?” I asked. He had just begun to call me that, and I knew that is what I would forever call him. He would always be mine.
“Here miss.” The boy had come back and was holding out some ice.
“Thank you so much.” I replied, and pressed the ice to Jonah’s temples where the bastard had punched him.
The boy was still standing there, but I ignored him. All I wanted was for Jonah to be awake, and with me. That was all I cared about.
That’s when I heard it. His voice. “Nicole?” He whispered.
“Jonah.” I replied, and cupped his bloodied face in my hands.
         “I love you.”
“I love you too Jonah.” I replied.
         “Can we go?” He asked.
“Do you feel all right to be in the car?” I asked, not wanting to hurt him.
         “Anywhere but here.”
“All right then. Let me help you up.” I stood up and put his arm over my shoulder, helping him to stand. It felt like an endless walk to his car. “Keys?” I asked, once we got there.
         “Back pocket.” He replied.
I reached in his back pocket, and curled my fingers around the keys.
I helped Jonah into the backseat, and then went around to the driver’s side.  I inserted the key in the ignition, and turned. Thankfully, the car started. Music blared form the speakers, Spoon, the same song we had been listening to on our way here. I switched it off, not wanting to disturb Jonah.
I turned around in the seat, and saw that Jonah was asleep. I put my hand on his head just to make sure, and was relived to discover that he was still alive. Good. Now I needed to take him somewhere. Places scrolled through my brain. My house, his house, Katie’s, Jeff’s. I decided on Jeff’s house, knowing that Claire was there and she would help me.

Jeff was awake, along with Claire. Jeff helped me get Jonah out of the car while Claire made up a bed on the couch.  I stayed by Jonah that night. All night. When he woke up, I took him home, and told his parents that we had ran into the school bully, and I had taken him home. That was the last time I saw him. He moved away the next day.

My brain churned, processing everything that I had remembered, tried to put behind me. But I could never forget Jonah. Never. I pulled my phone out from my back pocket, and found Jonah’s number, still programmed into my phone. My finger lingered over the TALK button, and I eventully pressed down, wanting to hear his voice more than anything.
All I heard was static. Then a voice. “Hello?” I couldn’t tell, was it Jonah’s?
“Jonah?” I asked, cautiously, hoping it was him.
“Who is this?” He asked, and I knew it was Jonah.
“It’s Nicole.” I could hear breathing and then a door shutting.
“Baby. Oh my gosh. It’s you. I’ve missed you so much.” It was him. My Jonah. I didn’t lose him. My throat began to choke up and I felt tears coming on.
“Jonah. I love you.” Was all I could manage.
“I love you too Nicole. I want to see you so bad. Where are you?” He asked. I could feel the desperation in his voice.
         “I’m at home.”
“Expect me. I’m coming.” He said, and then he said, “I love you, and I’m coming. I promise,” and then he hung up.

So You Probably Want to Know Who I'm Talking About.

So welcome! Hi! I thought since you spent the time finding your way here, you might want to know the deal with my story.
It's about this girl. Nicole. 18, summer after senior year. Meet this guy Jackson. (not quite sure his importance yet!) Old Boyfriend comes back (I think...) who's name is Jonah, after my all-time favorite guy character, Jonah Griggs (refer to Jellicoe Road). 3 sisters.
For everyone who wants to know, I'm not even sure if her parents and sister actually dies. It's just an idea.
xoxo,
Willa

I'm Not Sure If This Should Stay

The first thing I remember is singing.  All of us.  My mom, dad, Claire, Michelle, Allison, and myself, were all in the car singing along to “We’re A Family”.
The last thing I remember is hearing Claire yelling, “TREE!”  I remember feeling like I was floating over myself.  I remember sirens and screaming.  I remember people rushing towards me, pulling me away from the seat.  I remember seeing a tree. Then, it goes blank. Nothing.
“Nico?” A guys voice echoes in my head.  I feel like I know it.  I just can’t remember…
“Nicole. You’re awake.”  A face comes into view and it all comes together.  Jackson.  My boyfriend.  The guy I love.
“Jackson?”  I faintly whisper.  It’s all I can muster, my throat it too dry.
“Oh Nico.” He leans over and wipes my bangs away from my forehead and kisses me.  “I missed you.”
“I missed you too.” I replied.
“I need to go get a nurse, we’ve been waiting for you to wake up.”
“Stay with me. Please.”  I need to see someone I love.  Just for a little while.
“I will.  I promise.”  He kisses me again and then pokes his head out the door to signal a nurse.

“She’s awake!”  A nurse says as she comes in the door.
A team of nurses and doctors come flooding in the door, carrying machines of all sorts and plugging them into different sockets in the wall.  Jackson comes in and sits down in a chair in the back.  I’m just glad he’s here.  Doctors push buttons and yell things at nurses, who make notes and grab things off shelves.  Too. Much. Commotion…

“Hon?” My eyes open again to see a sweet looking nurse standing over me.
“Where’s Jackson?” Is my first thought.
“He’s in the waiting room, sleeping.  He was about to fall over from lack of sleep.”  She replied, chuckling.
“Where’s my mom?”  I ask, thinking of her face and eyes.
The nurses face deepens. “She’s not here sweetie.”
“What do you mean not here?  She has to be here!  If I was here, she would be right next to me! Not YOU!”  I scream.  I don’t know what’s wrong with me.  This isn’t who I am.
Jackson rushes in the door.  “Nico?”
“Jack, tell her my mom would be here.”
“Nico… You’re mom won’t be coming.”  He says, crouching down next to my cot.  “She’s dead.”
Tears begin to roll down my cheeks.  It starts to come back to me.  Her face, smiling and singing along in the car, and then a flash of light, a scream, and her face, bloody on the airbag.  Then, it goes black.  “Alli? Claire? Michelle?”
“Alli and Michelle.”  I want to cry, for happiness.  At least two my sisters, two of the ones who know everything, are alive.  Claire…
“Daddy?”  My dad has always been one of the closest people to me.  The one who pushes me to be myself, and no one else.  To never aspire to be more like my sisters.
“I’m sorry Nico.”  I can feel my sees begin to well, salty tears rolling down my face.
“No.  No.”  Was all I could whisper.
Jackson knelt down on my bed and held me in his big strong arms while I cried for my family.  For my mom, my dad, and Claire.  For Jeff who lost the woman he loved.

The next morning I woke up to find Jackson asleep in on the couch they had moved in for him, and a steady beeping coming from some machine of the many, next to me.  I sat up in bed and looked around my hospital room for the first time.  The walls were white, the furniture was white, the floor was white.  The lights and Jackson’s sweatshirt were the only things that had any color.  I thought of my room at home.  The sky blue walls, my pink closet from when I painted it in 2nd grade.  My bright orange bedspread and my electric green pillows.  I had always been a person who loved color, and loved the feeling it gave me.  This room was just too… White.  I looked over to find a “CALL A NURSE” button next to my bed.  I pressed the button and waited for someone to appear.  I needed color.  Now.
“Miss?”  The sweet-looking nurse popped her head in the room.
“Yes, is it possible for me to switch rooms?”  I asked her, hoping the answer was yes, and that room would a lot more colorful than this one.
“Well… That depends…”  She thought for a minute before giving me a firm answer.  “What would you like in it?”
“Color.  Lots of it.”  I replied, “Just a room with lots of color.”
“I think we can do that…”  The nurse replied, winked, and popped back out into the hall.

My new room was a olive green with sky blue trim on the windows.  The room was designed for little kids, and it had a table and an extra bed in the corner, specifically for parents who wanted to stay with their kid overnight.  It became Jackson’s new bed for the time being.  We spent every waking hour together.  He brought Checkers, Chess, Skip-Bo, Clue, SORRY!, anything to keep me happy.  He even brought sappy love movies, which he absolutely hates.  He is probably the only thing that kept me from busting the hell out of that hospital.  Him and my sisters.  I learned that Michelle was in the Burn unit with Highly Intenive Care, and Alli was in a recovery wing.  She had a concussion and was still recovering.  I had the mildest burns and bruises.
I learned a few things about hospitals while staying in one.   A) Nurses are a lot nicer than you think, and are much more preferable than doctors.  B) The food sucks.  C) Everything is white.  Even the furniture! D) I am never going into the medical profession.  Ever.

“Miss Nicole?”  My nurse had sneaked into my room.
“Yeah Nancy?”  My nurse and I had become very acquainted over the past few days.
“Alli just woke up miss.  Would you care to see her?”
Alli.  Awake.  Alive.  I can see her.
“Miss?” Oh right, she asked me a question.
“Yes. I would love to see her.”
         “I’m assuming right away?”
         “Right away.”
“I’ll go let the nurse know!”  She practically ran out of the door.  My new friend, Nancy, knows that I have been waiting and counting each day until I can see either of them.  I knew the it would be sooner for me to see Alli, because the doctors are trying to rebuilding Michelle’s skin.   She is having trouble breathing though, which is causing some problems.  They think she may have a respiratory infection.
“Jackson!”  I whisper into the corner.
         “Huh?”  He says sitting up.
         “Alli just woke up!”
He looks at me.  “You serious?”
“Yeah! They just came and told me!”
“That’s great!”  He says, coming over to sit down next to me.  “When can you see her?”
         “Soon. I hope.”  I reply.
“Jackson?” I ask, after a while.
         “Yeah Nico?”
         “I love you.”
“Oh Nico.” He leans down as kisses me, hard, and with passion.  Just like the kisses we used to share outside my front door when we first started dating.  “I love you too.”  He whispers into my ear.  He loves me.  Jackson loves me.

Alli is lying down in her cot, eyes fluttering open and closed.  She looks so vulnerable and alone.  I want her to be with me, or have someone to be with her, like Jackson is with me.
“Alli?” I whisper, walking towards her.
“Nic? Is that you?” She whispers back.
I look down at my sister lying in a cot, just awake from a coma.  “Yeah… It’s me.” I reply.
“Is mom here?”  She doesn’t remember.
         “No. Alli-.”
“Where is she?”  She cries out, “Where is mom?”
         “Alli. Listen to me!”
She gazed up at me in surprise.  “What?”  She asks, seeing that something is clearly wrong.
“Mom, she-won’t ever be here.”  I barely whisper.
“Oh.” Alli says, lying back down.  “Oh.” She repeates, and then I see a tear roll down her cheek.
“I know Alli, I know.”  I lie down next to here and we hold each other, protecting ourselves from whatever comes our way.
“I never got to say goodbye.” Alli whispers, thinking of our mom.
“Me neither.”  I reply, sighing.  We both lost a part of our lives.  Permanently.
“Is dad alive? Claire? Michelle?”  She asks looking up at me.
“Only Michelle, but she’s barely holding up.  She is in intensive care.”
“Oh.”  She says, pondering this thought.  “Nic? Will you call Micheal?”
I had totally forgotten about Micheal, her boyfriend.  That is who she needs right now.  “Yeah. I’ll call in a minute.  Do you need anything?”
“Will you do my makeup? Please? I feel like I look like crap.”
I laugh at her, seeing how strong she is trying to be.  “Sure.”
